MICRO-CHEMICAL LABORATORY
ESTABLISHMENT AT DUNEDIN LECTURER ARRIVES IN NEW ZEALAND (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, July 31. Scientific and medical research in New Zealand will soon be greatly assisted by the establishment in Dunedin of a micro-chemical laboratory, the first of its kind in this country. It will be set up at the University of Otago, and the lecturer appointed to it. Dr. T. S. Ma, arrived at Auckland from Sydney by air on Saturday. A Chinese national, Dr. Ma, who is accompanied by his wife and young son. graduated Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Chicago, and was in charge of the micro-chemical laboratory there during the war. When he returned to China in 1946. he was appointed Professor of Chemistry at the National Pekin University, Peiping. and a few months ago became visiting professor at Lingnan University, Canton. The main advantage of a microchemical laboratory is that it uses only a very small amount of material, said Dr. Ma. What is used is measured in milligrammes, or the 30,000 th part of an ounce. Although she prefers to be regarded as Mrs Ma. Dr. Ma’s wife is also a Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Chicago. She received her degree for work done in social services and administration.
Dr. and Mrs Ma will leave by air for Dunedin to-morrow. *
