Dr. R. O. Buchtfnan, formerly of Tapanui, Otago, and since 1938 reader in economic geography at the University College of London, has been appointed to the chair of geography at the London School of Economics. Dr. Buchanan, who is aged 54. visited New Zealand last year at the 'invitation of the University of New Zealand, and lectured in the university centres. — London, July 30. After 35 years with Government shipping services. Captain Leonard Robertson, superintendent of Mercantile Marine at Wellington, retired yesterday. During his many years at sea. Captain Robertson took part in many difficult salvage feats, and served in manv tvpes of ships. He was bidden farewell bv the Marine Department on Saturday, and left yesterday for Auckland. where he will spend his retirement. —(P.A.) Mr L. S. Dennis, manager at the Hermitage, Mount Cook, will leave on Wednesday to take over the management of Chateau Tongariro. He will be succeeded bj 7 Mr C. M. Mullan, formerly of Hotel Te Anau. New Oilfield in Japan.—Japanese engineers have discovered a new oilfield at Yabase in Northern Japan, which is expected to increase Japan’s known crude oil resources by 50 per cent.—Tokyo, July 30.
