SQUASH

GILLIES WINS SOUTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP (New Zealand Press Association.) , TIMARU, July 31. Flaying some of the best squash that has been seen in New Zealand, J. A. Gillies (Invercargill) won the South Island squash rackets championship at Timaru yesterday. Gillies beat the New Zealand champion, M. J. Souter (Timaru), in the semi-final with a faultless performance, and went on to beat W. E. Renton (Timaru) in the final, the match going to four closely-contested games. Gillies, who recently came to New Zealand from England, was a finalist in the British amateur championship in 1946. Renton retrieved brilliantly to hold Gillies from the front of the court in the final, but Gillies, with well-executed drop shots, kept the games slightly in his favour. The score was 5-9, 9-5, 9-5, 9-6. The South Canterbury title matches were held in conjunction with the South Island titles.
