N.Z. MAKES 360 FOR SIX

Return Game With Glamorgan WALLACE SCORES 165 NOT OUT (From A. W. MITCHELL, Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) SWANSEA, July 30. The most pleasing feature of New Zealand’s comfortable total of 360 for six wickets against Glamorganshire, at Swansea, was the 165 not out by Wallace, who batted delightfully, in his best form, for five hours and five minutes. It was Wallace’s fifth century of the tour, the first he has scored since May 19, when he made 197 against Cambridge University. After reaching 910 at the end of May, in eight innings, he made only 231 in 21 innings. Today he added 60 with Hadlee, 84 with Donnelly, and 176 with Smith, who batted with a more careful selection of shots than usual, for an attractive 71. Hadlee was glad to win the toss, for although the pitch was easy paced today, it has the reputation of crumbling on the second day. Rain delayed play for 20 minutes towards the end of the day? New Zealand’s Bad Start New Zealand’s innings did not begin too happily, for within 12 minutes Sutcliffe was caught at silly mid-off by Woolier off Hever, and half an hour later Scott, playing forward to Hever, was brilliantly caught at square leg by Clift. Hever, a medium-paced bowler, had at that stage taken two for six off five overs.

Wallace began his innings with a quietly patted single to leg, and it was his only scoring shot in 35 minutes. Hadlee, however, was relishing Woolier, also a medium-paced bowler, and in two overs hit him for 16, including three boundaries to the off and on. The New Zealand total was 50 in 55 minutes, and after Wallace had played himself in, he took nine off Watkins in one over. Hadlee put Watkins through slips four times for 12 runs, and one snick offered Hever a difficult chance. After the partnership had added 60 runs in an hour, Hadlee was well bowled by Watkins. Then Wallace began a stand with Donnelly which was to last through lunch for 87 minutes and to add 84 runs. At lunch the score was 109 for three (Wallace 36, Donnelly 6). They took things very quietly after the interval; Muncer, a' right arm spinner, and Hever bowling steadily, and only five runs were scored in 20 minutes, 19 in 40 minutes. In the ne?ct 20 minutes 41 were added, Donnelly taking 11 off four balls by Muncer, hitting all round the wicket. Wallace off-drove Hever again, with perfection, and went on to reach 50 in two hours 20 minutes. Then Donnelly played late to Watkins and was bowled. Smith Bats Well Smith once again put his first ball through slips for four. After his two unfortunate innings at Sheffield, however, Smith was taking no chances. He gave a little more thought to his shots, and runs began to come. Wallace reached his century after three and a half hours by hitting Davies all round the wicket. It was delightful batting. At lea New Zealand had made 246 for four (Wallace 101, Smith 26). In the next 55 minutes they added 62, Smith reaching 51 in an hour and 55 minutes. Then rain, which had been threatening for a quarter of an hour, sent the players off the field. Smith was eventually leg before to Hever, after batting two-.and a quarter hours, and Rabone, c'alling for a second, was Tun out. There was some curiosity why Woolier did not take the new ball when it was due at 209. He used the old one to the end of the day, although the new ball suits Hever.
