CROSS-COUNTRY RUNNING

J. R. CLARKE WINS RACE AT HALSWELL J. R. Clarke (Christchurch), in winning the senior A division of the Halswell cross-country race for the sixth time on Saturday afternoon, recorded 37min 3sec, his best time, and the second best ever recorded for the event. _ Conditions were ideal and according to Mr T. Wilhelm, one of the originators of the course and the trail layer, the best ever experienced. _ T h e ?S ld went away to a fast start, with P. E. Ellen and G. R. McLean, both of University, and J. R. Clarke slowly moving to the front. The first on to the hills with about one and a half miles covered, were Ellen and McLean, with Clarke handy in third place. Clarke moved to the front going up the second hill and steadily increased his advantage to wm by about 280 yards from G. Johns (Timaru), with Ellen third. The teams’ event was closely contested, with noth University and the newlyformed Olympic Club challenging Christchurch for first place, only four points separating the three clubs. Christchurch won, with 1,4, 15, and 26 placings, giving a total of 46.

D. G. Sadler, A. C. Brownie, both Christchurch, and the Baptist runners, J. Finch ? nd B. Pingwall, went to the front early m the junior (four and a quarter mile) event. At the top of the first hill Sadler and Brownie were leading, with Finch third. Sadler built up a 40 yards lead going up the second hill, with Finch moving into second place and Dingwall and Brownie keeping handy. Sadler held on to wm comfortably by 150 yards, with Dingwall 80 yards behind Finch. l he^ sei L lor . B race - J - Daly (Marist) A. B. Cocks (Anglican) approached and were still together with half the distance covered. Cocks then gradually built up a lead, with H. S. Crookbain (Christchurch) moving into second place to finish 250 yards behind the winner.

The Christchurch Club also won the teams events for the senior B. with 2,5, I*, placings, and the junior contest With 1,6, 8, and 10.
