GOVERNOR OF MALTA
SIR FRANCIS DOUGLAS CRITICISED BRITISH GOVERNMENT’S POLICY CONDEMNED (Rec. 9.30 p.m.) VALETTA, June 16. The retiring Governor of Malta, Sir Francis Douglas, who was formerly a Labour member of the British House of Commons, had been a misfit, and the experiment of appointing a partypolitician as Governor should not be repeated in Malta, said the “Times of Malta’’ to-day.
The newspaper said that Sir Francis Douglas had endeavoured to discharge his functions, but “it has been beyond his capacity or personality to make up for the fact that the British Government has failed and is failingto comprehend the problems of the imperial heritage into which it came.
“In the United Kingdom, the Socialist Government’s imperfect conception of its overseas responsibilities will have found a reason why Sir Francis Douglas was appointed, and why his Governorship of Malta has fallen far below the island's expectations and vital need.’’
