OAMARU WINTER MEETING

RACING

GOOD CONDITIONS LIKELY

ADVENT MAY CONTINUE WINNING RUN

Kartikeya has made good progress at ■ ( Riccaitun since he resumed racing at the ( South Canterbury meedng alter a spell.) His training tasxjs hare been impressive• and they have brought him into g.-vd con- • J dition tor his outing in the Oumaru Winter, Cup to-day. The Finis luur-year-old may '. Gispute favouritism tor the race \w*tn an- • other Riccarton candidate in Money •. Lender. The race bears an ope.t ap-; pearance, and it will not be surprising if Pageant and Ara Chief, recent hack: graduates which scored double successes i at the Dunedin winter meeting, add in- | terest to the finish. The open sprint, the Grange Handicap. ; has drawn a small but useful field n i which Alamode Luminous Knight, and i the Trentham-trained Deprive may have. the best following. The programme is likely to be run j under good winter conditions. No rain i has fallen at Qamaru this week, and the track yesterday was in good o.der. Friar Phillip, top-weight with 9-0 in I the Trial Handicap, has attracted attention to his prospects by his efio-.t to finish second to Good Form in the Electric j Stakes at Wingatui last Saturday. The; Ninth Duke three-year-old was not wed placed tor the run home, and fin.shed j strongly over the last fuilong. He lost‘ his cnance on the second day when he i dwelt at bairier-rise. ■ The Riccai ton-trained Sally Gold has; sh wn speed in her races and tuns best . when setting the pace. One of the Sal- j magundi mare's best recent performances | was her second to Defectus at Ashburton | last month. She led to the straight and : fought on well when challenged over the last furlphg by Defectus. a smart galloper. " ' The Gore-trained Granta’s best effort this seasen was’-her second in a division of a novice race -at Invercargill last month. In the Electric stakes at Wimatu. last Saturday she was one of the leaders to the straight, but faded over the final stages. Vain Lad has shown little form since he finished second in a weak field at Beaumont, but Scuttle’s efforts at Wingatui indicated that he is a likely improver. Red Winner, a stable-mate of Grania, ran fourth in the Novice Handicap on the first day at Wingatui. and in his other engagement at the meeting made a fair showing. The Haughty Winner gelding has done little racing this season, and his recently outings may have improved him. Revelry has shown promise in her track tasks at Riccarton. but she may require further racing to bring her to her best. Zarcon's Chance Z ar con. which has been off the winning list since she won on the Oamaru course in January, appears to have good prospects in the one-mile Burnside Hack Han- * dicap. The Lo Zingaro filly has been racing consistently, but it has been apparent that she needs a strong rider to prevent her from drifting. She will be ridden to-day by C. C. Stokes, who e hould be able to get the best out of her. Air Chief. Burnbrae, and C icket Field are also engaged in the Farewell Hack Handicap, and the!" programme has not ye» been announced. Swift Action, a winner at sensational odds at Washdyke, is in form for another solid effort. The best prospe ts of the others may be Mandeville, a lone-nricea winner in a novice field at Wing tui. a d Governor, which finished strongly Into third place in the Aidworth Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, at Wingatui last Saturday Advent in Form Advent is the likely favourite lor the Farewell Hack Handicap bn the strength of has recent winning performances at Omoto and Amberley. Open Sky showed promising summei form in stronger hack fields th"’n she will meet here, but her recent effoxts have been disappointing. Dark Chief ran a close second to Mr Micawber on the second day at Washdyke, but his nerform- > ances at Wingatui were not so cticou raging He is likely to start in this race in preference to the Grange Handle p. Oroncko has only to produce a performance comparable with his effort to fi'ish second to Mr Micawbet on., the first day at Washdyke to be a ‘likely c&nd date. Good Form, a WingatOi, and (Golden Winner appear ..to have the bdSt credentials of the other acceptors.
