WELFARE COUNCIL IN OTAGO

CHAIRMAN RESIGNS BECAUSE OF PUBLICITY

(New Zealand Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 17.

Exposure to publicity which he considered contrary to the ethics and traditions of his profession was one of the reasons given by Dr. Harold Palmer in offering his resignation from th? chairmanship of the Otago Old People’s Welfare Council. “There is a tradition in my profession that good doctoring does not go well with publicity, and. having Deen brought up in metropolitan conditions in which c-ne had remained anonymous. I had no idea of the extent to which our work would have made me liable to publicity,” declared Dr. Palmer in a statement to the council. “I do not question the necessity of this or that, but I personally am not prepared to sustain such publicity. Not only is it contrary to my own personal temperament, but it is contrary to the ethics and traditions of the profession.”

The resignation was accepted with regret and Mr H. A. Glasson was elected his successor.

Dr. Palmer was appointed psychiatrist to the Otago Hospital Board in November, 1945, and came to Dunedin from the Woodside Hospital, Muswell Hill. London.
