LETTERS CARRIED FROM PRISON
FINE IMPOSED ON ' WARDER
(New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 17. A warden at the Mount Eden prison, Thomas Russell Goodchild, was to-day convicted and fined £1 on each of two charges ci conveying letters from the prison. The police said a watch was kept when the authorities became concerned that letters were being conveyed illegally, and Goodchild was caught with a letter in his possession. He admitted the offence. Goodchild, who has been employed at the prison for three years, told the Magistrate (Mr J. H. Luxford): “The man who asked me to take the letter was very plausible, and I was foolish enough to be sympathetic.” The Magistrate said he would not impose a severe fine, as Goodchild had been dismissed and had forfeited arrears of his salary.
