MAN DROWNED THOUGHT TO HAVE ATTEMPTED TO RESCUE FRIEND (New Zealand Press Association.) INVERCARGILL. June 17. A drowning accident occurred at Bluff soon after 6 o’clock last evening when a man failed to recover after being taken from the water. He was: Ronald Craig Little, aged 35, a fisherman. of Stewart Island, married, with three children. Mr Little had invited two friends. Ronald Taylor and a man named Frew, to go aboard his boat, the Spray, which was moored alongside the oyster boat Kekeno. As the men were climbing aboard. Mr Taylor slipped into the water. Mr Little apparently dived in to save him. and Mr Frew attempted to pull them out of the water, but found that, unaided. he could not do so. He then went to the Leopold L. D.. an overseas vessel in port, and obtained help. Both men were pulled out of the water and were taken aboard the ship. Mr Taylor recovered sufficiently to be sent to hospital, but Mr Little failed to respond to prolonged artificial respiration. FIVE PERSONS INJURED CARS COLLIDE ON ONEWAY BRIDGE (New Zealand Press Association.) TAUMARUNUI, June 17. A head-on collision this morning between two motor-cars on a one-way bridge, in the National Park, caused severe injuries to five persons. ■Hie cars were given by Keith Melville Hickson, Rosetta road. Raumati, and David Bernard Horrobin. of Ohariu valley. Johnsonville. Both drivers were slightly injured. Horrobin’s mother * and father, Cela Daisy and Arthur Horrobin, received serious head injuries. Hickson’s wife. Marion Eliza Hickson, suffered a broken arm and broken ribs. MAN FOUND DEAD IN HUT \ (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 17. A railway ganger was found dead in his hut near Mangere crossing. He was William Albert Thorn, aged 50, married, with two children. MOTOR-CYCLIST INJURED Slight injuries to his head were suffered by Mr Frank Nankivell, aged 44, of 45 Gayhurst road, when his motor-cycle and a car collided at the corner of Barbadoes and Hereford streets yesterday afternoon. He was admitted to the Christchurch. Public Hospital at 2.45 p.m., and his condition was reported last evening to be satisfactory.
