CHILD DROWNED IN POND STRAYED AWAY FROM HOUSE (New Zealand Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, May 23. A girl aged one year and nine months was accidentally drowned In a pond on her lather’s property at Seaward Downs on Saturday. She was: Rowena Marjortfe Morton, daughter of Mr and Mrs R. H. Morton. The child had been playing near the house with her sister aged three. Their mother went to look for them and found the youngest girl floating face downward in the pond.
CYCLIST KILLED COLLISION WITH TRUCK (New Zealand Press Association.) ROTORUA. May 23. While cycling on the Te Wrtiroa road at 8 p.m. yesterday. Arthur Sylvester Podmore. aged 60, of Rotorua, collided with a truck. He died of head injuries shortly after his admission to hospital.
BODY FOUND IN HARBOUR SEAMAN THOUGHT DROWNED ON MAY 14 (New Zealand Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May . 23. The body of Harold Horne, aged 4fl, ship’s carpenter of the vessel Clydebank, was taken from the New Plymouth harbour at 1 p.m. to-day. It is believed the body had been in the sea for abotit nine days. A dredgQ was working near the berth previously occupied by the Clydebank and apparently disturbed the body, which floated to the surface. , Mr Horne was missed from the ship on May 14 and was later posted as a deserter. It is now assumed that he missed his footing when returning to the ship and fell into the sea. The CJydebank left for Wellington on Wednesday.
PINNED BY FALLING ’ TREE
DEATH OF 70-YEAR-OLD MAN (New Zealand Press Association.) NAPIfcR, May 23. A man was killed this afternoon when he was pinned by a tree he had been felling on his section. He Was James Anderson, aged 70, of Taradale. Two horsemen saw the tree fall and as they rode past the property heard groans. They called a party of nearby workers, but by the time the tree was cut away Mr Anderson Was dead. Mr Anderson was Uh experienced bushman. He leaves a family of three sons and three daughters.
TWO BOYS BADLY BURNED
EXPLOSION OF KEROSENE PRESSURE STOVE (New Zealand Press Association.) m NELSON, May 23. Two boys were admitted to the Nelson Hospital yesterday in a serious condition suffering from extensive burns to the face, arms, and hands caused by the explosioh of a kerosene pressure stove. They were Dale Alexander, aged 11, and Brian Williams, aged 8. The accident happened when C; Alexander, a carpenter, of Gladstone road, Richmond, was pumping the stove, and the two boys were watching. Mr Alexander suffered burns on his arms. The hospital reported to-day that the condition of both boys had Shown some improvement.
LYTTELTON MAN SHOT IN NECK
(New Zealand Press Association.) GISBORNE, May 53. A Lyttelton seaman, Murray Scott, received a bullet wound in the heck yesterday in an unusual accident. Mt Scott, a member of the crew of the Kopara, accompanied by Charles Freer, was on board the fishing boat Rosa, hunting sharks with a rifle. When the Rosa lurched suddenly, Mr Freer was thrown to the deck, and the rifle discharged, wounding Mr Scott in the neck. The boat returned to port and the wounded man was taken to hospital. His condition is reported as satisfactory. *
HEAD INJURIES When* he was knocked down by a cyclist at 12.35 p.m. yesterday on the corner of Lancaster street and Moorhouse avenue, Mr A. Price, of 5b Moorhouse avenue, suffered injuries to his head? He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital. His condition was reported to be satisfactory last evening.
