AT AMBERLEY TO-MORROW

RACING

FAITHFUL PAL IN FORM

KEEN RACE LIKELY IN STARKY MEMORIAL Excellency’s half-brother Faithful 'Pal may be rewarded for some consistent performances with a win in .the Amberley Handicap, of seven furlongs, at the Amberley Racing Club’s annual meeting to-morrow. Although he has not won a race since the Banks Peninsula meeting in March, Faithful Pal has . registered some good performances, and in- stronger company than he will • meet to-morrow. On a track that has been eased by rain, the Man’s Pal five-year-old should make a strong bid to justify his likely position as favourite. Luminous Knight will not start in this race to-morrow. He will appear at the Otaki meeting, but in spite of the smallness of the field the material is there for a highly interesting race. Flying Orders, the sprint winner at the ’ South Canterbury autumn meeting, and Whitley will probably set a strong pace, and Lorna Leigh and Kirkella are capable of adding interest to the finish. Lorna Leigh secured a narrow decision over Lady Christine and Luminous Knight in the Flying Handicap, of seven furlongs, on the first day of the Ashbur 7 ton meeting. With the benefit of a full apprentice allowance on that occasion she carried 7-13. She has been handicapped at 8-9 to-morrow, but will again have an allowance. . Faithful Pal was a close third to Clyde Bridge and Lexia over a mile at Ashburton last Saturday. It was a sound performance on his part, as the race was run in record time for the course. He has run his best races over shorter distances, but his Ashburton performance served to show that he retains his form. Flying Orders did not quite measure up to the class of the best sprinters which raced at the Easter meeting at Riccarton, and he was unplaced in his two starts after setting the pace over the early stages. However, he will appreciate the fall-away in class to-morrow and also the smaller course. Since he won over six furlongs at the Marton meeting in January, Whitley has raced five times without distinguishing himself. He does not hold much appeal over seven furlongs in this field, but he should be prominent in the running for most of the distance. Kirkella ran fourth in the Waltham Handicap on the final day at Riccarton, and he filled a similar position behind Clyde Bridge, Lexia and. Faithful Pal in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton. The Solicitor-General gelding may be the most likely candidate to upset the favourites to-morrow. Deficiency, which completes the field, raced consistently earlier in the season but has been disappointing in her last two starts. If she were to reproduce her best form she would not be out of her depth in tnis field. Infatuate’s Chances Infatuate and Terminate, which until a few days ago were in the same ownership, have the best credentials of the 14 acceptors for the Brackenfie’d HighWeight. Both were winners at Ashburton last Saturday, Terrpinate in the Chatmos Hack Handicap, of one mile and a quarter, and Infatuate in the seven furlongs Fairfield Hack Handicap. Terminate will have his first race in the colours of ‘ his new owner, Mr J. H. Grigg, to-morrow. Infatuate scored a clear-cut win last Saturday, and in his present form he is entitled to the favourite’s position tomorrow. The Defaulter gelding hqs raced with mtfrked consistency recently, and he has proved his ability to master this distance. Terminate’s form has been good and he appeals as a likely stayer in the making. He showed gameness in a keen finish to win at Ashburton last Saturday and, although he may find Infatuate too good for him on the day, he should, with average luck in the running, secure one of the placings. Beau Soir. after some indifferent showings, surprised by running a creditable second to Infatuate last Saturday, and he may be capable of adding to his winnings to-morrow. Flying Control will be making his first appearance since the spring, and may be in need of a race. The others hold little appeal. -A yf

Keen Race Likely The G. B. Starky Memorial Handicap may be the most interesting race on the programme. Five of the seven acceptors, Peridot, Flibbertigibbet, Watchword, Hormond, and Pageant, took prominent parts in the memorable finish to the Chatmos Hack Handicap at Ashburton last Saturday, the race being won by Terminate. Flibbertigibbet was second, Peridot (whose saddle slipped halfway through the race) was third, Watchword fourth, Hormond fifth, and Pageant, sixth. ■> Peridot was the unlucky runner in that race, and he may have better fortune tomorrowHe has- the..ability to take up a handy position in the running, and that will-be to his advantage on the smaller coursS At Ajnberley. Flibbertigibbet has been prominent in the fthffT 4 " stages of her races with long and well-sustained finishing runs, and she has been at an advantage on roomier courses. If she is handy to the pacemakers for the final run the Battle Song mare may extend her winning record. Watchword was a creditable fourth st Ashburton, showing she has the ability to master a mile and a ’.]uarter. She will have- lost few supporters on that showing. Lights On has won two races this season, his last being over a mile at the Oamaru meeting. He beat some useful hacks, including' Dinnyhazer and Salmon King, on that occasion and ran out the distance on a track that was not fast in the smart time of Imin 39 2-ssec. He failed in the heavy going in his three races at the Riverton Easter meeting, but the conditions might not have been to his liking. Pageant has been finishing on in his races, and his chance must be respected. Riding Engagements The following riding engagements have been made:—L. J. Ellis: Dissenter, Faultrosa; C. C. ADELAIDE CUP WON IN RECORD TIME f N.Z.P. A.—Reuter— Copyright) ADELAIDE, May 11. At the Morphettville races the Adelaide Cup run to-day resulted:— ADELAIDE CUP, COLIN .. .. Williamson 1 Hoyle .. .. Unkovich 2 Sunfire .. .. .. Carling 3 Fifteen started. Length and a half; head. Time, 3min 23sec. The time for the two miles was half a second better than Beau Cheval’s State record. Sage King weakened six furlongs from home. Colin was the favourite. Beau Cheval won the Adelaide Cup in 1947. Little Activity There was little activity at Riccarton yesterday morning when the No. 7 grass was open for fast work. The track was soft, i Bridge and Wee Doria finished together after their run over four hurdles and both made fair showings. Wee Doria, which has hot yet raced, is a five-year-old chestnut mare by Battle Song from Doria, and she is trained for -Mr P. Curtis by G. S. Barr. The two-year-old Fantasy is an unlikely starter in the Novice Stakes at Amberley. Amberley Brackets The following horses will\be bracketed at the Amberley Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow:— Novice Stakes: Revelry and Dissenter. Teviotdale Trot: Freedom and Southpaw, Gallian and Wrackdale. Kowai Trot: Golden Slipper and Gio worm.
