The Acting-Prime Minister (Mr Nash) will travel to. Auckland on Sunday afternoon by air to welcome the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser), who is expected at Whenuapai from the United States at 5.20 p.m. that afternoon. Mr Fraser will return to Wellington either by train oh Sunday evening 01 a * r ° n On(^ morning.
The Minister of Works (Mr R Semple) will show a coloured film “Here is New Zealand,” at the Southbridge Hall to-morrow evening, and afterwards will give a brief address on “Democracy at the Crossroads.” ~
Viscount Bridgeman has been elected a director of the Union Bank of Australia, Limited. Viscount Bridgeman is also a director of the Alliance Assurance Company, Ltd., and of several other companies. Mr R. G. Gerard, M.P., was confirmed as candidate for the Ashburton electorate at a meeting of the Ashburton electorate committee of the National Party on Thursday evening.
Professor James Shelley was honoured at a reception given by the Government to mark his retirement from the position of Director of Broadcasting. The Acting-Prime Minister 'Mr Nash) presided. Ministers of the Crown, members of both Houses of Legislature, heads of State departments, and representatives of the musical. cultural, and civil life of the Community were present. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) sent a cablegram expressing appreciation of Professor Shelley’s work.— (P.A.) Mr W. J. W. Neate will leave New Zealand this month to represent the Grand Lodge of Canterbury and the Grand Lodge of Otago and Southland of the United Ancient Order of Druids at the Congress of the International Grand Lodge of Druidism. which will be held at Malmo, S wed eh. in August. Mr C. P. Collins, who for the last five years has been senior inspector of factories in Christchurch and has been promoted to district officer at Lower Hutt of the Department of Labour and Employment, was bidden farewell by the Christchurch staff of the department yesterday. The District Officer (Mr S. E. McGregor?, who made the presentation of a set of hair brushes and a fountain pen, recalled that Mr Collins first worked with him when he was district officer at Wanganui. He had welcomed Mr Collins’s appointment to Christchurch. Mr Collins had proved himself a most efficient officer and his relations with all with whom he had come in contact had been most happy. Mr Collins will leave on Tuesday evening for Lower Hutt.
Mr H. M. Stevens, who is retiring after 40 years’ teaching, was presented with a silver tea service at the Wharenui School. He has been headmaster there for six years.
