AT ASHBURTON TO-DAY
RACING
ALAIN EVENT AN OPEN RACE CLOISTER FAVOURED FOR HURDLES The Ashburton County Racing Club has secured good fields for the second day of its autumn meeting to-day. The weather has been fine at Ashburton during the week and the track is likely to be firm and fast. The main event, the Tinwald Handicap, has drawn 15 acceptors, and Luminous Knight is the only doubtful starter reported so far. Revolte, which raced well at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s autumn meeting for a second and a third, may be favourite, but speculation mav cover a wide range. Clyde Bridge. Balkis. Lady Christine. Disturbance, Shere Khan, and Faithful Pal will also be well supported. As was the case last Saturday, two horses may carry the largest percentage of the pool in the hurdle race, which will open the programme at 11.15 a.m. Last Saturday Knight Crusader and John Gay were the best supported candidates, and to-day Cloister and Periwig will probably carry most support. Cloister won the hurdles on the final day of the Easter meeting at Riccarton, after having finished second to Knight Crusader on the first day. On the first day of the Ashburton meeting. Periwig won the Longbeach Hurdles. The following horses will be bracketed on to-day’s programme:— Lauriston Trot Handicap: Chinese Gold end Sergeant-Major: Knightmare and Realm Again. Melrose Trot Handicap: General. Scott end President. Horses likely to find favour are:— Winchmore Hurdles.—Cloister, Periwig, Arctic Circle. Lagmhor Stakes.—Pefectus, Don’t Listen, Sally Gold.
