FIRST NEW BRIGHTON COTTAGE

Sir.—On reading the book “The Evolution of a City”'dealing with the growth of Christchurch and its suburbs, I noticed that Morrison mentioned that my father, Mr G. T. Hawker, took the frst four-roomed cottage in New Brighton in sections across the Eower Bridge. I remember his buying this cottage. As a matter of fact there were two cottages bought by him at this time, and it might interest readers of this book to know that these two cottages were on the site of the present Canterbury College, immediately opposite the' Botanic Gardens. My father bought both for removal, one being taken to New Brighton as mentioned, and the other one to Caledonian road. This latter cottage was demolished when Durham street was extended, as it stood where Durham street now enters Caledonian road.—Yours, etc., E. INNES. May 5, 1949.
