NEED FOR PHYSICAL FITNESS
ADDRESS BY GOVERNORGENERAL (New Zealand Press Association.) AUCKLAND, May 6. Advice to young persons to map out their physical lives by acquiring good habits was given by the Gov-ernor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg) in his address at the Auckland University College graduation ceremony. He said the art of life was to get fit and keep fit. “I am disturbed when I see young people drinking spirits in the daytime and chain smoking,” his Excellency said. “I have heard people say ‘lt’s good for me.’ They are only storing up trouble for themselves. The human being is a creature of habit, and the more you get, the more you want. “I had a friend once who drank a bottle of whisky a day. and boaster* about it,” Sir Bernard Freyberg continued. “As you can well believe, it was years and years ago,” he added amid laughter. “I remember people saying ‘Look at old . He drinks a bottle of whisky a day, and it has nc effect on him.’ Then at the early age of 42 he dropped dead while putting on his boots one morning. I was assure* by his friends—but I v’as not convinced—that it had nothing to do with his whisky habit.”
