VALVE CAST FOR POWER HOUSE
CHRISTCHURCH FIRM’S WORK From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, May 5. Described as possibly one of the most complicated castings ii_ stee! to be made in New Zealand, a new “clack” valve has been installed in the main pumping unit in the Greymouth Harbour Board’s hydraulic power house. It replaces a valve which developed a fault and caused a .najor breakdown towards the end of Augi st in the large pumping unit supplying power to the wharf cranes and. capstans. The new valve was instal- i led on Wednesday, and according to > the engineer to the board (Mr D. S. I Kennedy) it proved entirely successful, j The board considered importing a ■ valve from Britain, but it was decided i that the delay would be excessive, and j a Christchurch firm was commissio led ; to cast a new valve. Although the anal I figures are not available. Mr Kennedy i said that the cost of manufacturing I the yalve in Nev Zealand would be I considerably less than if a new valve | had been imported from Britain. The valve weighs about a ton. and is about : sft 6in long. “It is a credit to the manufacturers that a job of this kind ; can be done in New Zealand,” Mr j Kennedy said.
