LAST NIGHT OF OPERA
ENTHUSIASTIC SCENES AT THEATRE Discarding its traditional reserve the Christchurch audience at the Theatre Royal last evening gave the Jtalian Opera Company’s presentation of Rigoletto—the last opera to be presented by the company in its Christchurch season—an enthusiastic reception. Prolonged applause accompanied the fall of the curtain after the first scene.- and it was five minutes after the final scene before the hand-clap-ping, shouting, and stamping ceased Mario Basiola, as Rigoletto, was the favourite of the audience. Described by the manager of the company’s tour, Mr J- Nevin Tait, in a short speech after the opera as one of the greatest Rigolettos in the world, he was greeted with a crescendo of applause whenever he took a bow by himself The conductor, Mr Wolff-Ferrari was also warmly received, and the ‘arias sung by Jean Campbell, as Gilda, were vigorously applauded.
