OBITUARY

MRS W. A. WHITLOCK (New Zealand Press Association.) HASTINGS, April 20. Mrs Gertrude Gwenyth Beryl Whitlock, wife of Mr W. A. Whitlock, managing director of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald-Tribune” and a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs H. L. Gallien, pioneer residents of Hastings, died this* morning. Mrs Whitlock spent her girlhood in Hastings and before the 1914-18 war she went to England to study drama and voice production and on her return became a teacher of these subjects. During both wars she was actively engaged in patriotic work. In the first war she took a leading part in many stage productions for raising funds. In the second war she helped with patriotic and Red Cross work and was a member of a group working in a war weapons shop engaged mainly in making camouflage nets. Since the early 1920’s she was an active worker for the Plunket Society and was on the committee of this society for many years in Hastings and in Christchurch.

With her husband and family she lived successively for several years in Christchurch. Auckland, and Wellington and in these cities maintained an active interest in amateur drama and the PlUnket Society. She was a member of the Woodford‘Old Girls’ Association and for a time was vice-presi-dent of the Hastings branch. Last year, with her husband and daughter, Mrs Whitlock went for a visit to the United Kingdom. Travelling home by ship she became seriously ill after leaving South Africa and had to enter hospital the day after her arrival in Hastings.

She leaves three children, Mr William Antony Whitlock, of the editorial staff of the “Sydney Morning Herald,” Mr Henry Philip Whitlock, personal assistant to the High Commissioner for Western Samoa, and Miss Wendy Whitlock.
