(N.Z.P.A. —Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, April 19. The near record aggregate of 92,470 guineas was paid for 163 yearlings at the first day of the Easter sales. The aggregate failed by less than 3000 guineas to top the record of 95,835 guineas which was paid for 154 lots on the opening day last year. The market was noted for the absence of spectacular bidding and this was reflected in the average price of 567 guineas—56 guineas below last year’s average. Highest price was 2900 guineas, which was brought by a Felcrag—Dark Elegance colt.
Most enthusiastic support came for eight colts and seven fillies by the imported English sire Channel Swell. Fifteen lots by him realised 17,450 guineas, an average of more than 1160 guineas. A Channel Swell—Rosa Fe filly brought 1700 guineas, a Channel Swell—Vocal colt 1600 guineas, and a Channel Swell—Elation colt 1500 guineas. A colt by High Caste—Gay Romance realised 1800 guineas, and another High Caste colt from Bravura was sold for 1700 guineas. A filly by Ajax from Frangipanni brought 1900 guineas.
