TENTH PROVINCE OF CANADA
NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
DOMINION NOW LARGER THAN EUROPE
(Rec. 9 g.m.) OTTAWA, March 31. At 11.59 p.m., local time, to-night, Newfoundland and Labrador will become Canada’s tenth province, and Canada’s population will rise from 12,582,000 to 12,900,417. Canada will also become larger than Europe, for, with the addition of Newfoundland's 42,000 square miles and Labrador’s 1,100,000, Canada will now be 3,842,000 square miles, compared with Europe’s area of 3,776,000 square miles. To-morrow will be a day of celebrations throughout Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador. Newfoundland and Labrador people will benefit from Canada’s social security benefits and will ‘be subject to Canadian laws, and Canada will take over 63,000,000 dollars of Newfoundland’s 72,000,000 dollars public debt. It is estimated that for some years the union will cost Canada about 15,000,000 dollars a year, but the development of rich mineral finds ih Labrador is expected to repay Canada in the long run.
The union was decided last July by a referendum in Newfoundland and Labrador, and has since been ratified by the Canadian and British Parliaments.
