£945 RAISED IN STREET APPEAL

REPORT TO TUBERCULOSIS ASSOCIATION

The net financial result of the Tuberculosis Association’s street appeal, held on March 17, was £945. This sum included £lOl 19s 9d, the proceeds of a cake and produce stall held on the- same day in Cathedral square. These details were supplied at a meeting of the executive of the association held last evening with Dr. W. Gordon Rich (president) presiding. It was mentioned that the sum of £lO 17s was collected by the Papanui Technical College and £l7 10s 8d was subscribed in Lyttelton. It was decided to write to the editors of the two Christchurch papers, to the managers of the two broadcasting stations, to Mrs Rich, who was in charge of the stall and to other individuals and organisations who had helped to make the appeal so successful.

It was reported that so far, no response to the appeal had been received from the West Coast, Nelson, or Marlborough, from all of which districts patients are received at the Cashmere Sanatorium. The after-care committee reported that suitable work had been found for a discharged patient from the sanatorium. Applications had been lodged for State houses for patients’ dependants and about 15 applications for help of various kinds had been attended to. It was explained that 50 per cent, of State houses were allocated to returned servicemen and of the remaining 50 per cent., 10 per cent, were allocated to sufferers from tuberculosis.

The visitors to the sanatorium reported that they had paid regular visits to the Coronation. Hospital and distributed small comforts to patients. They had also visited the Upper Sanatorium at longer intervals. . Mr E. G. Beckett was welcomed as a member of the executive committee as a representative of the Junior Chamber of Commerce.

Before the business meeting an address on the treatment of tuberculosis was given by Mr E. B. McGregor Walmsley, who was thanked by the president.
