SCHOOLING AT RICCARTON
RACING
LAINDON TO RACE AT RIVERTON Laindon, which will race at the Riverton Easter meeting, shaped impressively when schooled over eight of the trial steeplechase fences with Light Tea at Riccarton yesterday morning. - Light Tea led over the first three fences, jumping slightly better than his companion, but he ran off at the fourth. Laindon was pulled up to give Light Tea a lead over the remaining fences, but drew away over the stand double the last time round. w No rider has been engaged for Laindon at Riverton, but an attempt will be made to get one of the Southland steeplechase jockeys. Rampage and Sir Willoughby set out for a schooling bout over two hurdles, but Sir Willoughby ran off at the second. When taken back he cleared it without hesitation. John Gay, Stand To, and Sailor Girl moved off together in a run over the hurdles, but Stand To hit the first and fell. John Gay completed the round well clear of Sailor Girl. Bravura, which is in good order for winter racing, jumped the stand double smoothly. Other jumpers in work at Riccarton include: Lord Robin and Shere Khan (W. Barr); Al-Sirat and Night Prince (A. Stove); Glad Fox and Catterick Bridge (E. W. A. Rosewarne); Gold Medallion and Master Play (E. J. Jennings); Robingay (G. Ridgway); Lunaria (G. S. Barr); Snowdale, Colonel Smart (R. P. Register); Roman Son (A. Griffin); Arctic Circle, Minion (C. G. Humphries); Young John (R. Wilson); Big Top (A. McMullan); and Martial Note (M. J. Wadley). A heavy fog hung over the course while most of the horses were being galloped yesterday, and timing the gallops was impossible. Now at Riccarton The four-year-old colt, Martianair (Christopher Robin—Martianess), which was recently purchased by Mr R. Exton, of Christchurch, has joined M. J. Wadley’s team at Riccarton. Martianair won two races and was five times placed last season for £350 in stakes. He has raced 15 times this season without getting on the winning list. His' best efforts have been two seconds and one third.
K. NUTTALL BACK
PRAISE FOR AUSTRALIAN Aiding , The Riccarton horseman, K. Nuttall, arrived at Bluff from Melbourne yesterday and flew to Christchurch in the afternoon. Nuttall went to- Australia in February under engagement to ride for the former New Zealander, Mr W. R Kcmball. He had seven rides in the Melbourne area, winning the C. M. Lloyd Stakes on the New Zealand-bred colt Ellerslie, which carries Mr Kemball’s colours. “Race riding in Australia is of a high standard-,’’ said Nuttall, “and you can rely on getting a reasonable run without striking interference. “The horses in the Melbourne area are good, but I don't think their stayers come up to the class of those in New Zealand,” he added. Nuttall said, the report that he intended giving up race riding was incorrect.
