CONFERENCE OF SMALL SEED GROWERS
OVERSEA MARKETS TO BE DISCUSSED From Our Own Reporter TIM AR U, March 30. A conference of small seed growers to discuss the fostering of seed-grow-ing in New Zealand and the opening of overseas markets will be held by the Dominion agricultural section of Federated Farmers in Timaru on April 20. The conference will be in the nature of an open meeting of growers in the federation. The Direc-tor-General of Agriculture (Mr E. J. Fawcett), Professor Hudson. of Canterbury Agricultural College. Lincoln. and Mr Holmes, of the Department of Agriculture, have been asked to attend. At a meeting of the agricultural section of South Canterbury Federated Farmers this evening, the chairman (Mr F. J. Henshaw), on behalf of the Waimate branch, suggested for consideration at the conference the imposition of a levy on small seeds and the setting-up of a body in the nature of a small seeds advisory board which won I administer the moneys raised through the levy. He suggested the board should consist of a majority of producer representatives, elected in a similar manner to producer representatives on United Wheatgrowers, the board to foster export trade and to provide reliable information about markets. It was hoped that such a board would strengthen the small seeds interest, said Mr Henshaw. The section set up a sub-committee to put the proposals before the conference.
