MERCHANT SHIPS FOR GERMANY
RESTRICTED TONNAGE AND SPEED REPORTED DECISIONS (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, March 30. “Germany’s merchant ships of the future are to be restricted in tonnage and speed,” says the political correspondent of the “Daily Mail.” “She will not be allowed to build any luxury liners for passenger traffic which might be converted into commerce raiders should war come. Her shipyards will be under strict inspection to see that she does not build up a potential war fleet. “Important decisions on this and other matters relating to German recovery will be confirmed when the Foreign Secretary (Mr Ernest Bevin) begins his talks in Washington tomorrow with the United States Secretary of State (Mr Dean Acheson). “While it is felt that Germany should have a merchant fleet big enough for her commercial needs, she will not be allowed to have ships capable of anything but short journeys. “Industries capable of conversion to war needs will be banned.”
