WOMEN’S SOFTBALL TEST

NEW ZEALAND BEATS' AUSTRALIA CN.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE,"March 30. New Zealand beat Australia by 9 points to 5 in the first women's softball test, which was played to-day in cold weather. Heavy over-night rain made the ground slippery, and the New Zealand plavers were handicapped in not being permitted to wear baseball shoes with cleats. Cleats are banned in Australian softball.

The very fast pitching by June Fitzpatrick, which Ijad all the Australians swinging late, and tl e determination of the New Zealanders to hit everything that came over the plate, were responsible for the visitors’ commanding win. The Australians were disconcerted in New Zeaand's second innings, when the visitors were batting with the utmost confidence, and forcing the field into errors. Australia struggled to overtake the leeway. but the fine battery work of June Fitzpatrick and D. Schwabe, backed by good infield play, kept the scoring down. P. Adamson hit a glorious home run in New Zealand’s third innings, to bring two runs over for the hit.
