NEW UNION OF CARPENTERS

MEMBERSHIP MORE ‘ THAN 500 , GOVERNMENT APPROVAL TO BE SOUGHT (P.A.) AUCKLAND, March 30. Membership of the new union of Auckland carpenters, which started at 236 at yesterday’s meeting, has increased to more than 500. - The executive will meet on Friday to draw up a constitution and rules which, it is hoped, will be ready by Monday. Two representatives will go to Wellington early next week to seek the approval of the Minister of Labour (Mr A. McLagan) of the formation of the new union. Meanwhile, legal opinions are being obtained on various phases of the situation and the position of the large funds held by the deregistered union. More carpenters reported for work with Auckland contractors to-day. One leading firm had 40 per cent, of its former employees back and others continued to receive inquiries from men who said they would be back on Monday. The national secretary of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union (Mr R. Stanley) said to-day the union could not recognise the organisation set up yesterday in opposition to the deregistered Auckland branch, because it did not speak for the majority of the carpenters and joiners in the area. .The membership of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Union before the dispute was about 1600.
