RUGBY FOOTBALL

CANTERBURY UNION'S ANNUAL MEETING SENIOR COMPETITION DISCUSSED A recommendation that two first gracic Rugby football competitions be held in Canterbury this season was lost when put to the vote at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening. The matter was brought up by Mr A. D McKenzie (University), who said that there were too many representative games, to the detriment of club footbail, during the season. He moved as a recommendation to the management committee that two competitions be held : one competition of one round to be played on Saturdays when there were no representative fixtures, and a separate competiton for Saturdays when there were representative fixtures. Mr J. Mullins (Marist) said that representative games should be cut down to a minimum. Certain representative matches brought in good revenue, but there were others which brought in no more than club games would, he said. Mr W. Britten said that it would he a bad day for senior football in Christchurch if the senior competition was confined to one round. Interest would drop, and players would go to the races. The president (Mr V. L. Jensen) said that the good done by representative games over the years had far outdone the harm to Rugby football in Canter bury. It was decided to have a fifth grace competition this year, provided that theie were sufficient entries. It was decided to open the season on April 23, with matches for all grades below senior reserve counting as preliminary games. A motion that the union present a blazer to each player representing Canterbury in six recognised representative matches, instead of three, as at present, was lost. Officers elected were:—president. Mr V. L. Jensen; vice-presidents. Messrs W C Dailey, R. R. Masters, and R. W. Blazey. honorary treasurer, Mr H. C. Blazey; committee, Messrs L. G. Loveridge, R. Calder, C. H. McPhail, J. N. Clarke, A K. Johnson, J. O. Hattersley, W. Mikkelson, and M. T. Gunderson. |
