CONSIGNMENT OF CEMENT
RAILWAYMEN REFUSE TO UNLOAD DEMAND FOR 1/6 DIRT MONEY Railwaymen at the Waltham goods shed refused to unload a consignment of cement yesterday morning, when their demand for Is 6d an hour dirt money was refused. The cement arrived from Nelson by the Taupata. and there were 160 tons for local firms. The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants (Mr A. B. Grant) said that the men had been offered the ordinary dirt allowance of 2d an hour and the use of gloves. The cement, he said, was contained in paper bags, which were very dirty to handle. The matter was being investigated, said the District Traffic Manager oi New Zealand Railways (Mr W. A. Breach), and a report would be forwarded to Wellington. The head office would then decide on what steps should be taken.
