WORKS PRIORITIES

Sir, —Your leading article has special interest to South Islanders in its last paragraph, which has a close affinity in the third column in "South Island Major Works.” Under this heading are printed six works selected by the Heathcote County Council to be recommended as South Island priorities. Two of these I mentioned in my letter of March 28 on regional planning. Let us hope that the term "Sockburn-Styx,” as applied to the projected railway, is a misnomer. But' any term, used frequently, has a psychological power, and may result in the suggestion becoming a reality. The number of works allocated, and when, is less important than what they are, and how planned. To the plans apply comprehensiveness and farsightedness, and then co-ordination, and we can safely start.—Yours, etc., W. R. EARLY. March 29, 1949.
