An explanation of the 14-day postpone; ment of the fight for the New ZealaM light-heavy-weight boxing title between Tommy Downes (Palmerston North) d’Arcy Hoffman (Dunedin), at Dunedin, was forthcoming in the Magistrate'# Coun at Palmerston North yesterday, when Downes the winner of the title, was charged with fighting in a public pi* o * on February 16. . Downes exhibited a bitten thumb. wni<® he claimed he had suffered in a fight ou * side a dance hall, and he said this ww been responsible for the postponement He pleaded not guilty, but was convicteu and fined £2 with costs. Mr L. H. Herd. S.M., said he was uj able to determine who caused the Dgn* but he had no hesitation in entering conviction. He had no power to supprwr Downes’s name, as requested by courw • because of previous convictions ag aui him.
