SALVATION ARMY TO SING “MESSIAH”
SOPRANO SOLOIST FROM ASHBURTON (P.A.) WELLINGTON, March 28. When the national chorus of the Salvation Army in New Zealand sings Handel’s “Messiah” next month it will be the first Salvation Army group in any part of the world to do so. This claim is made by the conductor of the 300-voice choir, Brigadier H. C. Goffin, who said to-day that the project had already roused considerable interest in Army circles in other countries. Singers will come from Auckland, Hamilton. Palmerston North, Masterton, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. The soloists, all Salvationists, are:— Mrs E. Bennison (soprano), of Ashburton; Mrs E. Pengelly (contralto), of Napier; Mr A. Pike (baritone), of Auckland; Mr J. Dowling (tenor), of Auckland. An organ accompaniment will be played by Mr H. Temple White. The performance will be given on April 30 in conjunction with the Army’s national congress in Wellington.
