AUCKLAND CLUB

CAPTAIN SANDY WINS TWO RACES “The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, February 27, Three wins for the Oamaru trainer, J. M. Bain, and the Christchurch reinsman, J Bryce, with Captain Sandy, which won a double, and Battle On, the defeat of Attack into third place in the Alexandra Park Handicap, and a surprise by Belworth, which returned more than a third of a century on the win machine, were features of the second day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s February meeting at Epsom on Saturday. Highland Kilt established a two-year-old mile grass trotting record of 2min 20 2-ssec. He ran the second half in Imin Bsec, and the last quarter in 34 2-ssec. Running round the field with a sharp dash at the three furlongs where Attack was hemmed in on the rails behind Maudeen, -Black Machine, and Dundee Sandy, the win favourite. Captain Sandy cleared away to win the Alexandra Park Handicap by three lengths from Black Machine. Attack, which did not get clear until well in the straight, finished fast to be a head away third, with a length to Captain Gaillard. Black Machine led. for half a mile, where Maudeen took charge and for the second lap was followed by Black Machine, Dundee Sandy, Captain Sandy, Attack, and Captain Gaillard. Maudeen tired and Captain Sandy dashed away to win decisively. Captain Gaillard broke at the start and ran out checking Attack which lost ground. This made his task more difficult, but it is doubtful if he could have won under any conditions.

The Great Northern Trotting Stakes was run in two divisions, the first being won easily by Gay Heritage in 2min 53sec for a mile and a quarter, and the second by Young Charles, who did 2min 48sec, a very smart performance for a two-year-old. Gay Heritage ran the last half mile of her division in Imin 6sec, and Young Charles did Imin ssec. Our Ida attempted to win the first heat all the way and was well clear with three furlongs to run. Straightened for the home run Gay Heritage came fast to win going away by three lengths and a half from Our Ida. A length back Soanetaha beat Stuart Early by a head for third place. Trailing Our Smith for a mile. Young Charles came away in the straight to win the second division by three lengths and a half from Mundanity, which finished on to cut the pacemaker, Our Smith, out of second place by half a length, with Village King a nose back fourth. Mary Wooton, in third place to the home turn, broke under pressure and finished fifth. The weather was fine and the track was fast. There was .an attendance. of 18,500. The totalisator handled £131,364, against £100,207 on the first day. The total for the meeting was £231,571, compared with £301,855 for the two corresponding days of the inter-Dominion championship meeting last February, Before the start of the St. Andrews Handicap, but after the closing of the totalisator, Cyone Man collapsed and died.
