DUPLICATE ROAD TUNNEL

SECOND UNIT OPENED NEAR KAIKOURA The second of a duplicate set of road tunnels on the Kaikoura-Oaro section of the main coastal highway has been completed at Parititahi, a distance of approximately seven miles south of Kaikoura. The tunnel is 201 feet in length, but because of the soft nature of the rock in part of the tunnel, concrete reinforcement as lining had to be made. The new unit is placed on the landward side of the present Parititahi road tunnel, and will be used by all traffic travelling north, while the seaward tunnel will be used by all south-bound traffic. The new tunnel was opened during the week. At Raramai. two miles further south, a duplicate tunnel 187 feet long was constructed some time ago. The duSlicate tunnels have been built to reeve congestion on the coastal road.
