QUOTA SYSTEM TO CONTINUE

IMPROVEMENT LIKELY SOON STATEMENT BY COMPANY REPRESENTATIVE (P.A.) AUCKLAND, February 25. There were signs that supplies of sugar might be better in the next few weeks, said a spokesman for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company, Ltd. Deliveries had been normal during the week, he added. In the meantime the quota system, which is based on the average purchases made by differ- , ent firms between January and June last year, would remain in force. The company was sending shipments to the South Island as shipping opportunities offered. However, it was too early to judge the full effects of the quota system. The shortage was affecting consumers just at the time when sugar was wanted for bottling and jam making, said a representative of the Master Grocers’ Association, describing the sugar shortage as<‘grim.” He said that some grocers had not had any sugar for as much as 10 days. It was a Dominion-wide shortage. He said there was a time lag in deliveries to be overtaken, and he thought that this was the big difficulty. He saw no immediate prospect of relief for the housewife.
