BRITISH COMMUNITY CENTRES

VISITS BY DR. O. H. FRANKEL Now that local education authorities in Britain are responsible for the establishment of adult education facilities, community centres are “springing up everywhere.” said Dr. O. H. Frankel, chief executive officer of the Wheat Research Institute, who returned to Christchurch yesterday after being oversea since last May. Dr. Frankel and his wife are very interested in the Risingholme community centre, and while in Britain they visited many in and near London and Cambridge. Dr. Frankel said the British Council had been very helpful in putting him and his wife in touch with the various centres. He found that the British centres’ problems and work were very similar to those in Christchurch. Buildings and facilities there were not as good, but there was probably more staff available. There was a special training course in Scotland for community centre wardens. An article on the Risingholme centre was written by Dr. Frankel and published in a journal of the British centres.
