POLICE OFFICERS TRANSFERRED

SUPERINTENDENT AT CHRISTCHURCH MR J. B. YOUNG REPLACES MR D. J. O’NEILL Mr D. J. O’Neill, Superintendent of Police at Christchurch, has received notice of his transfer to Wellington. His successor at Christchurch will be Superintendent J. Bruce Young, of Wellington. This was announced yesterday by the Commissioner of Police (Mr J. Cummings). The transfers are to take effect almost immediately. * Superintendent O’Neill was promoted from the rank of inspector and transfered from Hamilton to take charge of the Christchurch district on March 8 of last year. He joined the Royal New Zealand Artillery as a young man, and from there he went to

the Police Force. z He was stationed at New Plymouth, 'and then went to Rahotu, a country station, as a mounted constable. While in that capacity he toured New Zealand with the Duke of Windsor, then Prince of Wales, in 1920. He has been stationed at Wellington, Taihape, Hastings (where he took a prominent part in reorganising civic amenities after the earthquake in 1931). Dunedin, Auckland, and finally Hamilton, before coming to Christchurch. Mr O’Neill was born in South Canterbury, but he has never been stationed in that district. k Superintendent Young has served at various stations in New Zealand. He was sub-inspector in charge of the detective office at Christchurch before being promoted to the rank of inspector in December. 1944, and transferred

to Invercargill as officer in charge of that district. In T 946 he .was transferred to Wellington as officer in charge of detectives there. He has been in charge of investigations into several important cases in the Wellington district, including the Mount Victoria murder. He was oromoted to the rank of superintendent last month, when it was announced that he was going to Dunedin as officer in charge of the district. That appointment has been superseded by his transfer to Christchurch.
