FOREIGN POLICY OF AUSTRALIA
Support of United Nations RAISING OF LIVING STANDARDS (Rec. 10 p.m.) SYDNEY, Jan. 21. Australia's foreign policy was to support the United Nations and act at all times in accordance with its principles and charter, said the Minister of External Affairs (Dr. H. V. Evatt), addressing a luncheon meeting arranged by the United Nations Association of Australia. Dr. Evatt is also President of the United Nations General Assembly.
Twice in 35 years Australia had been involved in a war which had its ! immediate origin far from her shores. That was why Australia was directly concerned in all situations which j might endanger peace wherever they • occurred. ‘ The United Nations aim of raising ‘ living standards was of direct con- > corn to every Australian. The immediate cause of the last des pression was something which lay be- : yond Australian shores. > The Commonwealth Government today planned to forestall a future depression and had taken a lead to ad- • vocate international planning and aci tions to prevent a depression. ? I Paying a tribute to Mr Truman, Dr. ‘ Evatt said that he was one of the ■ j greatest supporters of the United Nai j tions and had fought hard for world ■ peace, world justice, and better living I standards.
