DOLLAR IMPORTS BY AUSTRALIA

“NO CHANCE OF ANY RELAXATION” (Rec. 8.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 21

The Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Chifley) said to-day that in spite of Australia’s improved dollar position no possibility existed of any general relaxation on imports from the dollar areas.

Overall there had been no general dollar improvement in the Empire. The Australian, position had improved because of strictness, but Australia still drew dollars from the Empire pool, figures for which were not as good as had been expected.

While Britain was in trouble, Australia could not afford to be lavish, said Mr Chifley.
