CHARGES AGAINST CARDINAL
VATICAN’S REPLY TO HUNGARY
(Rec. 9.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 21. The Rome correspondent of “The Times” says that the Vatican newspaper “Observatore Romano,” in a leading article ridiculirig the Hungarian Government’s “Yellow Book” dealing with the arrest of Cardinal Mindszenty. Primate of Hungary, on charges of espionage, says: “If Cardinal Mindszenty made any so-called confession, he did so while under the influence of a drug used in Communist prisons. “The ‘confession’ must therefore be challenged as a lie. coming as it does after Cardinal Mindszenty's own warning not to believe any confession attributed to him after his arrest.
“The falsity of the confession is further proved by its opening words, in which Cardinal Mindszenty is said to have boasted that he belonged to the Hungarian nobility, whereas he has never concealed his peasant origin.”
