BRITISH COMMENT ON CONFERENCE

“ENTHUSIASM SHOWN FOR CO-OPERATION” LONDON, January 21. “The Times,” in a leading article on the New Delhi conference, says that the meeting is important because it is regional, and not racial, in outlook. ’ “It is remarkable that such general enthusiasm has been shown for close co-operation between all nations of the Eastern Hemisphere, irrespective of cultural, racial and economic differences. The presence of Australia. New Zealand, India. Pakistan, and Ceylon—each so different from the others—no doubt strengthened the belief of the conference in the practical possibilities of this kind of co-opera-tion. “The Security Council's condemnation of the Dutch should not, however, be taken to imply any unqualified vindication of the Indonesian Republic. “The Republican point of view is strongly represented in New Delhi, while the Dutch case, which is by no means negligible, seems likely to go by default. The Dutch plan for a free United States of Indonesia is wise. “Unhappily. Dutch action against the Republic produced deep distrust of Dutch intentions which was only removed when effective power was made over to the new federal government”
