DOUBLE TAXATION

AUSTRALIA NOT SEEKING AGREEMENT WITH U.S. (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 9 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 21. Australia is reluctant .to enter into an agreement on double taxation with the nited States similar to that operated between the United Kingdom and Australia. . The suggestion that there should -be such an agreement was advanced by the United States Ambassador to Australia (Mr Myron Cohen).

The Prime Minister of Australia (Mr Chifley) said to-day that the matter had been examined but circumstances operating between the United Kingdom and Australia were not analogous with those between the United States and Australia. There was not the same basis on which to reach a reciprocal arrangement. It is known that in the Government’s view such an arrangement with the United States would be one-sided. America draws quite large sums from Australia while Australian investments in the United States are negligible.
