LIVESTOCK STATISTICS
The New Zealand sheep population on April 30 was 198,661 less than at the corresponding date in 1947, although the number of breeding ewes was 311,700 higher, according to official agricultural and pastoral statistics for the 1947-48 season. In the season to January 31, 1948, 19,835,046 lambs were tailed, compared with 18.642,298, at January 31, 1947; 5 697,455 lambs were shorn, compared with 4,929,263, and the total number of sheep shorn was 30,075,213, against 30,214,772. Other livestock figures, with those to January 31, 1947, given in parenthesis, were:—dairy cows m milk, 1,713,532 (1.657,690); total number of dairy cattle, including cows m milk, 2,638.289 (2,585,810); total beef cattle, 2,077,998 (2,047,990); horses, 203.885 (206.575); breeding sows, 68,354 (67,938); total pigs, 548,177 (545,874).
