COURSING

Sir,—l hope all your readers took bote of the picture “Speed” in “The Press” to-day—a small, defenceless animal being chased, hunted to death. Recently, I understand, the method of killing animals for human consumption has been inquired into with the purpose of saving unnecessary pain find suffering. Surely cruelty should, not be tolerated in a civilised country. Ask any of our men who were escaped prisoners of war what it is like to be hunted down and recaptured. But the poor hare has no chance whatever. It is a pity that the “sports” Who favour coursing cannot draw lots among themselves, the winner to take the hare’s place. Of course, he being a human being, the dogs would have to be called off before he was actually killed.—Yours, etc.. IN AS MUCH, ETC. January 20, 1949.
