The first, distinguished scientist to reach New Zealand for the Pacific Science Congress opening at Auckland early next month. Dr. Herbert E. Gregory, of Honolulu, arrived at Auckland by the Jugoslav vessel Partizanka yesterday. Dr. Gregory was founder of the Pacific Science Association and president of the first congress in Honolulu in 1128. An emeritus professor of geology at Yale University, as Director of the Bishop Museum at Honolulu, he persuaded Sir Peter Buck to go to Hawaii to further his research into Pacific anthropology. Sir Peter Buck later succeeded Dr. Gregory as Director. — (P.A.) Mr James Deans, of Homebush, and Mr W. H. Faulkner, of Kowai Bush, werb re-elected chairman and deputychairman, respectively at the annual meeting of the Malvern Electric Power Board. Mr Edgar C. Smith, who was formerly plant engineer for the South Island for the Public Works Department. with headquarters at Christchurch. has rejoined the department as senior engineer at Dunedin. Mr J. Ede, a fitter employed by the Christchurch Drainage Board, has been granted leave of absence from May to December this year to attend, as a member of the New Zealand contingent. the World Rover Scout moot in Norway.
