Sand Bags for Groyne The purchase of 10,000 sand bags at 8 cost of 4s a dozen in Auckland for Use in building a testing groyne at the outlet to the Estuary was approved by the Christchurch Drainage Board last evening. The cost of the bags delivered in Christchurch will be approximately £215. The War Assets Realisation Board advised that sand bags were not likely to be made available through it. “This is an example of monopoly control and the ratepayers are being asked to pay an exorbitant price for the bags,’ .said Mr J. E. Jones. “It is exploitation. An appeal for used cement bags would have met with a ready response, he said. Mr W. P. Glue replied that cement bags were not suitable and that the bags ordered were twice the size of cement bags. The price’ was much lower than that submitted for the supply of other bags. The regulations provided that cement bags had to be returned.
