WIDENING THE SELWYN RIVER.—Part of the Selwyn river below the upper Selwyn Hute showing the effects of the North Canterbury Catchment Board’s scheme for clearing and widening the river to improve drainage and flood control. Under the scheme, which will cost £35,000, the river will be similarly cleared for a distance of 23 miles. So far, stop banks from six to seven feet high have been built for four miles from the river’s mouth.
