ANIMALS’ PROTECTION SOCIETY
ACTION BROUGHT BY CITY COUNCIL
“The attitude adopted to avoiding service seems to support the suggestion that delay has- been sought,” said Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M., declining an application on behalf of the Animals' Protection Society in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday for an adjournment until the New Year of proceedings brought by the Christchurch City Council. The charge against the society was one of permitting premises at 17 Glenroy street (formerly Graham street), Woolston, to become a nuisance.
Mr B. McClelland, for the society, said that the summons had beep served only on Monday. He asked for an adjournment till January 26, so that witnesses could be brought from Wellington and a defence prepared. Opposing the application for an adjournment until next month, Mr G. C. Sandston, for the City Council, described attempts that had been made to serve the summons. The custodian of the home had finally accepted the summons, after it had been pointed out to him that a summons could be served at the registered office of a society. It was important that this matter be cleared up before the holidays, he said An adjournment until December 22 was granted.
