SCHOOL BUILDING WORK

YEAR’S OPERATIONS OUTLINED “In spite of restrictions and the need for building permits, school building work, ground improvements, etc., completed or put in hand during the year, involved an outlay of more than £250,000, the exact total being £261.024,” said the chairman (Mr A. E. Lawrence), speaking at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. “This will no doubt surprise some of the critics who have suggested that the board is lagging behind in its activities in meeting the ever-increasing demands for additional school accommodation. New schools and additions completed or in progress at 23 centres involve an approximate outlay of £171,000.” These works comprised major building operations, said Mr Lawrence, including the secondary block at Temuka District High School, costing £20,000; a new school at Marchweil (Timaru) now being erected at a cost of £21.000; a new school and additions at Waddington; rebuilding additions at Ashburton East, £19.000: additions at Lincoln District High School: a new school at Wairarapa road; additions at Riccarton; rebuilding and additions at Makikihi; rebuilding and additions at Glentunnel; additions at West Spreydon; new classrooms at Fendalton; and additional classrooms and rebuilding in several parts of the district. Mr Lawrence said that £23.825 had been spent or was being spent on additions to existing school residences or new residences. Three of four new dental clinics costing £2350 had been completed, and schoolground imnrovemrats at 13 schools had cost £B6OO. /The board’s architect (Mr J. A. Bigg) and his staff have undertaken extensive works for other denartments costing £25.000. including the hostel 21 the Rangiora District High School. Diev are working on plans and soecifleations for a new school at Ham road, and the rebuilding of the TaySchool on the West Coast.
