ENGAGEMENTS

The engagement is announced of Leonard George, second son of Mr and Mrs G. H. Tobeck (Greenpark), to Lavinia Mary, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs H. T. Twose. Harewood road. Christchurch. The engagement is announced of Muriel Mellon, elder daughter of Mr and Mrs A. M. Johnstone, St. Martins, to Owen Trevor, only son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Conway. Waipara.

The combined garden clubs ot Christchurch have contributed £1859 to the Christchurch Horticultural Society’s building fund, said Mrs R. T. Tosswill (president of the Riccarton Garden Club) at a Christmas party held by the club yesterday at the home of Miss Ina Jones. Rata street. Guests of honour were Mrs M. J. Barnett and Mrs A. H. Jecks and Mrs C. G. M. Boyce (president and past-pre-sident respectively of the Cashmere Garden Club). A talk on Biblical plants was given by a guest speaker. Competitions were won as follows: — decorative section A: Miss Jones 1, Mrs F. Williamson 2, Mrs F. Wagner 3. Decorative section B: Mrs R. P. Jones 1, Mrs A. E. Hough 2. Cut flowers, A: Mrs Williamson 1, Miss Jones 2, Mrs J. L. Hay 3. Most outstanding exhibit: Miss Jones. Members of the club were the guests of the committee at afternoon tea when a Christmas cake given by Mrs Tosswill was cut and distributed. A remarkable amount of talent was shown by members of the St. MartinsOpawa Garden Club yesterday when, at their Christmas party a competition on the making of floral hats was held. Some beautiful hats, smart and becoming, were displayed before the judges, Mrs E. King and Mrs O. M. Millar, who awarded the prizes as follows: —A section: Mrs W, O. Chapman 1, Mrs D. Wilson 2. B section: Mrs T. W. McDonald 1, Mrs P. James 2. A demonstration on the making of celophane hats was given bv Mrs T. Johnston and Mrs J. Cowell showed how pictures can be made from dried flowers. Mrs McDonald thanked the demonstrators and Mrs C. T. McAloon (president) presided at the party which was held at the home of Mrs Millar and was very well attended. Mrs McAloon was thanked by Mrs Wilson for her gift of a Christmas cake which was cut when afternoon tea was served.
